BMRCL Identifies Properties for Orange Line Construction on Outer Ring Road

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has pinpointed over 700 properties along the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch from Kempapura to JP Nagar IV Phase for the construction of the 32.2-km Orange Line as part of Phase III. This acquisition, essential for connecting the Blue Line (KIA-Silk Board) and Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara-Nagawara), is projected to cost Rs 1,900 crore. The joint survey of these properties for the elevated corridor is set to commence next week, with BMRCL planning to acquire them in three phases through notifications, with the initial notification expected within two months.

“The elevated line will traverse along the ORR median, necessitating properties for Metro stations, entry and exit points, and viaduct construction at certain locations. Approximately 1.3 lakh sqm of land is required along the route, comprising vacant land and built-up areas. While there are no high-rise buildings, numerous ground +2 or +3 structures obstruct the line’s path,” stated a BMRCL official.

Some of the identified properties earmarked for acquisition belong to defense authorities and government agencies like BMTC, BDA, and BBMP.

Interchange Facilities

The proposed Orange Line by BMRCL will offer interchange facilities with operational and forthcoming Metro stations, as well as other transport modes. In the north, at Kempapura and Hebbal, it will connect with the Blue Line. Hebbal Junction will serve as an interchange point, providing connectivity to suburban rail and Namma Metro’s phase III A line (Sarjapur to Hebbal).

On Tumakuru Road, it will intersect with the operational Peenya station of the Green Line. The Orange Line will overlap the Green Line here. At Sumanahalli junction, it will intersect with another Orange Line from Magadi Road (Hosahalli station to Kadabagere).

“At this junction, BMRCL intends to establish a depot spanning 75 acres of land, catering to both lines,” added the official.

On Mysuru Road, the Orange Line will run above the operational Purple Line and Nayandahalli Metro flyover. It will link with the JP Nagar Metro station on Kanakapura Road, terminating with an interchange facility at JP Nagar IV Phase on Bannerghatta Road.

As per the original plan, BMRCL intends to construct a road-cum-Metro flyover at two junctures — Kanakapura road to Sarakki (1.3km) and Ittamadu to Hosakerehalli (1.5km). Recently, BMRCL announced plans to explore the feasibility of a road-cum-Metro flyover along the entire corridor.

When questioned about potential alterations to the land plan in the future, the official mentioned, “We may require some additional land for Metro station construction, but the increase will not be substantial.”
