The land purchase and sale deed registration processes in all sub-registrar’s offices, including the Sadar sub-registry office in Cachar district, have hit a deadlock, causing significant hardships for the public.
The situation has worsened due to the absence of deputy registrars and sub-registrars in recent months, leading to delays in clearance for land transactions from the district commissioner’s office. This delay has further complicated an already cumbersome registration process.
A local deed writer expressed concern over the mounting backlog of files in sub-registrar offices, indicating slow processes and bureaucratic hurdles. Rural residents, often reliant on land sales for urgent financial needs such as medical expenses and wedding costs, are trapped in administrative red tape.
Additionally, errors in the online document uploading system at the registration office exacerbate the registration process’s challenges, leaving families in distress.
Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev has appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging urgent intervention to alleviate the suffering of stakeholders. She highlighted that besides inconveniencing the public, the stagnation in land transactions is depriving the state government of vital revenue.
In her letter to the chief minister, she emphasized the urgency of resolving the bureaucratic logjam in Cachar district’s land registration process, as families struggle with delayed registrations, impacting critical life events like weddings and medical treatments.
