The government has opted to transform the NH-316 section connecting Bhubaneswar and Puri into a model stretch. Usha Padhee, the Transport Secretary, directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to implement the necessary infrastructure enhancements, aiming to establish it as Odisha’s inaugural model highway.
In a recent meeting with NHAI officials addressing road safety concerns, Padhee urged NHAI to formulate a development plan for this model stretch, emphasizing the importance of timely completion. “The Chief General Manager of NHAI has committed to developing the Bhubaneswar to Puri road into a ‘model stretch,’ ensuring the provision of all essential infrastructure,” stated Padhee.
NHAI revealed its experience in establishing model stretches across various states, defining them by comprehensive safety and aesthetic elements such as road signage, markings, road furniture, impeccable road designs, and well-designed junctions with proper entry/exit points.
The proposed model stretch is anticipated to feature CCTV cameras for traffic violation detection, adequate lighting, drainage systems, pedestrian walkways, greenery, redevelopment of the existing toll plaza at Pipili, user facilities, wayside amenities, and the elimination of accident-prone areas.
Addressing vulnerability concerns on national highways, the Transport Secretary urged NHAI to construct foot-over bridges (FOBs). NHAI responded by assuring that funds were not a hindrance for FOB construction and invited proposals from district road safety committees for such projects.
