The much-anticipated metro rail project in Dehradun is gaining momentum as the initial survey phase is set to begin soon. This ambitious undertaking is not limited to Dehradun alone but envisions extending its reach to the twin cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh, thereby enhancing connectivity among these three major towns in Uttarakhand.
IG Drones, a specialized company in drone technology and analytics, has secured the contract for the first phase of the project. Their task involves conducting a comprehensive topographical survey, aiming to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Personalised Rapid Transit (PRT) corridor within Dehradun city. The envisioned PRT corridor will span from Panditwari to the Railway station, Clement Town to Balliwala, and Gandhi Park to IT Park.
Gopal Sharma, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Uttarakhand Metro Rail, Urban Infrastructure and Building Construction Corporation Limited, stated that the PRT will play a crucial role as a feeder line for the upcoming metro corridor in Dehradun. The initial phase outlines two metro lines, one stretching from ISBT to Gandhi Park and the other from FRI to Raipur.
Sharma revealed that the proposal for the Dehradun metro rail received approval from the state cabinet in February 2022. However, progress has been awaiting consideration at the Union government level. According to the ‘letter of acceptance’ issued by the Uttarakhand Metro Rail, Urban Infrastructure and Building Construction Corporation, the survey is expected to be concluded within two months from the commencement date.
