As a seasoned infrastructure expert with over two decades of experience, I am excited to share my insights on the Navi Mumbai Coastal Road project, a game-changer for connectivity and development in the region.
Project Overview
The 7-kilometer-long project, undertaken by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), will connect the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) [1]. The route will originate at Amra Marg and end at the MTHL junction in Shivaji Nagar, Ulwe, with a 1.2-kilometer elevated road connecting Targhar Railway Station to the airport [2].
Key Components:
- A 5.8-kilometer long coastal road starting from Amra Marg and ending at the MTHL junction in Shivaji Nagar, Ulwe
- A 1.2-kilometer long elevated road connecting Targhar Railway Station to the Navi Mumbai International Airport
- A 4-lane road with a provision for future expansion to 6 lanes
- A 2.5-meter wide pedestrian and cycle track along the road
- A 1.5-meter wide footpath along the road
Alignment
The project alignment starts at Amra Marg and runs along the coast, passing through the villages of Ulwe and Targhar, before ending at the MTHL junction. The alignment has been designed to minimize the impact on the surrounding ecosystem and to avoid any major settlements.
Interchanges
The project includes several interchanges to ensure smooth connectivity to the surrounding areas. These interchanges include:
- A trumpet interchange at the MTHL junction
- A cloverleaf interchange at the Targhar Railway Station
- A grade separator at the Amra Marg junction
Design Speed
The design speed for the project is 100 kmph, ensuring a smooth and efficient journey for commuters.
Environmental Clearance
The project had been facing hurdles due to environmental concerns, but CIDCO has now received permission from the State Forest department [3]. To mitigate the environmental impact, CIDCO will undertake compensatory afforestation measures, including planting native species on degraded forest land in Shevare Khurd village, Jalgaon district [4].
Impact on Connectivity and Development
As a Chartered Engineer and infrastructure expert, I believe that this project will have a significant impact on the region’s connectivity and development. It will:
- Enhance accessibility to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, reducing travel time and increasing connectivity to the city [5]
- Reduce travel time between Kharghar and Belapur, making it easier for residents to commute [6]
- Boost economic growth and development in the region, attracting new businesses and investments [7]
- Provide a sustainable and efficient transportation network, reducing congestion and pollution [8]
CIDCO’s Commitment
CIDCO has assured that the project will be completed in a timely and environmentally responsible manner [9].
As an IGBC AP, I appreciate CIDCO’s commitment to minimizing the impact on the surrounding ecosystem and ensuring that the project benefits the local community [10].
Timeline
The project is expected to be completed by 2025, with the following milestones:
- Completion of land acquisition: 2023 [11]
- Start of construction: 2023 [12]
- Completion of the project: 2025 [13]
