The development of a bridge aimed at facilitating smooth traffic flow to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 1 (CSMIA T1) is advancing rapidly, with more than 70% of the construction work already finished. Once operational, the bridge will provide a convenient route for motorists traveling towards Bandra.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority is overseeing the project along the bustling Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai, ensuring minimal disruption to regular traffic while expediting construction to open the bridge for public use next year.
Key Details:
- Starting point: Nandgiri guest house
- Ending point: Sai Baba Mandir Bhajiwadi
- Contractor: M/s. RPS Infraprojects. Pvt. Ltd
- Status: Over 70% of work completed
- Alignment: Two-lane one-way flyover for Bandra-bound traffic from International Airport T2
- Project cost: Rs 48.43 crore
- Total length of flyover: 615 meters, width is 8 meters (2 Lanes)
Challenges and Innovative Solutions:
- Managing constant traffic flow at WEH
- Utilizing an inverted T arrangement on steel portal beams during girder launch, eliminating the need for temporary support in the center and reducing roadway obstruction during construction.
Benefits:
- A new flyover adjacent to the existing one will prevent traffic conflicts between T2 Terminal heading towards Bandra and traffic from Andheri heading towards T1 Terminal/Vile Parle.
- Decongestion of intersections beneath the WEH flyovers will enhance connectivity for quicker travel, saving both time and fuel.
Official Statement:
An official highlighted that the bridge’s design incorporates a shorter length and lower height, minimizing land usage and ensuring a visually appealing result. The flyover aims to alleviate congestion at the T1 junction, playing a crucial role in easing traffic bottlenecks and enhancing traffic flow between the Western Express Highway and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
