Karnataka Proposes Three Potential Sites for Bengaluru’s Second Airport, Awaiting Centre’s Approval

The Karnataka government has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, recommending three potential locations for a second international airport near Bengaluru. This initiative aims to alleviate the growing air traffic at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), which is expected to handle 90 million passengers annually by 2033.

Proposed Airport Locations

Two of the proposed sites are situated along Kanakapura Road in the southern part of Bengaluru, diagonally opposite KIA. One location is in Bangalore Urban district, while the other is in Ramanagara district. Notably, a site near Harohalli is approximately 10 km from the last station on the Metro’s Green Line. The first site along Kanakapura Road spans 4,800 acres, while the second covers 5,000 acres.

The third proposed location is along Kunigal Road in Nelamangala, where 5,200 acres have been earmarked for the project. The state government has assured the central government that at least 4,500 acres will be made available at any of the shortlisted sites to speed up the approval process.

Growing Air Traffic and the Need for a Second Airport

With air traffic in Bengaluru growing significantly, there is an urgent need for additional airport infrastructure. Although KIA is expanding its capacity, it may face operational challenges due to increased passenger and cargo volumes in the coming years. A second airport will help alleviate congestion and support the city’s long-term aviation needs.

Urgency Due to Competitor Airport in Hosur

The pressure to finalize the location for the second airport has intensified, as Tamil Nadu is advancing with plans for an airport in Hosur, which is located close to Bengaluru. If Karnataka delays the project, Bengaluru risks losing a portion of its air traffic to Hosur, impacting passenger and cargo movement within the state.

Awaiting Centre’s Approval

The Karnataka government is now waiting for approval from the Centre before proceeding with land acquisition and detailed planning. Once a location is finalized, authorities will begin feasibility studies, environmental clearances, and infrastructure planning. The aim is to move quickly to ensure Bengaluru’s aviation infrastructure can keep up with future demand.

A final decision on the airport location is expected soon, following further discussions between state and central authorities.
