Adani Group to Provide 350 sq ft Flats to Dharavi Residents in Redevelopment Initiative

The Adani group announced on Monday its commitment to provide eligible residents of Dharavi slum clusters with new flats measuring 350 sq ft. Engaging in the redevelopment of Dharavi slums in partnership with the Maharashtra government, the group emphasized that this flat size represents a notable “17 per cent more” space than what is conventionally offered in slum redevelopment initiatives.

In addition to the increased living space, the newly constructed flats will feature dedicated kitchen and toilet facilities, a significant improvement from the previous standard. Earlier, inhabitants of informal settlements were allocated houses measuring 269 sq ft. Subsequent developments by the state government, starting in 2018, saw an increase in home sizes to the range of 315-322 sq ft.

Beyond the individual living spaces, the redeveloped area aims to enhance community living by incorporating amenities such as community halls, recreational areas, public gardens, dispensaries, and daycare centers for children.

Eligibility criteria are tied to a cut-off date of January 1, 2000, ensuring that residents meeting the specified conditions can benefit from this redevelopment initiative. For those deemed “ineligible,” the proposed affordable rental housing policy, in line with state government norms, will be implemented to provide alternative accommodation.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project operates as a special purpose vehicle through a joint venture between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government. Awarded the contract in November 2022, the company is tasked with the ambitious goal of rebuilding the largest slum clusters in Asia, transforming the landscape and living conditions for Dharavi’s residents.
