Sam India Builtwell has commenced construction on the 45.4 km Chennai Metro Line-3, connecting Madhavaram Milk Colony and SIPCOT via 49 stations, following in the footsteps of URC Construction’s recent activity.
Groundbreaking Ceremony at Indira Nagar Station
In a significant milestone, Sam India hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at Indira Nagar Station for Package UG05-RT-01, in collaboration with officials from Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) and Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL). This package encompasses the construction of underground stations along the 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project’s stretch between Adyar Depot and Taramani Link Road Ramp.
Initiation of Construction Works
Marking the occasion with a traditional puja ceremony, Sam India deployed a Schwing-XCMG trench cutter machine to commence grabbing and trenching activities for the construction of the diaphragm wall (D-wall) around Indira Nagar Station.
Contract Details and Scope
CMRL had initially awarded the Rs. 665.99 crore contract for Package UG05-RT01 to RVNL in July 2023, with a deadline of 1725 days (approximately 4.7 years). Subsequently, RVNL subcontracted the construction work to Sam India Builtwell for an undisclosed sum. This package encompasses the complete civil work at three stations, partial works at one station, and the construction of a ramp leading to Line-3’s elevated section towards Sholinganallur and SIPCOT.
Scope of Work Overview
The scope of Package UG05-RT01 includes the construction of three underground stations at Adyar Depot, Indira Nagar, and Taramani Road Junction, along with associated ramp and other works excluding the diaphragm wall at Thiruvanmiyur Metro station.
Project Progress
RVNL had secured contracts for three station packages (UG03-RT01, UG04-RT01, UG05-RT01), comprising a total of 16 stations between KMC and Taramani Road Junction. Larsen & Toubro had initiated tunneling work to interlink these stations in February 2023, signifying steady progress in the Chennai Metro infrastructure development.
