Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) Unveils Revamped Route Map for Second Phase Expansion

Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) is forging ahead with a new vision for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro, scrapping previous government-proposed routes. HMRL Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy revealed plans to construct new Metro rail lines covering a total stretch of 70 km in the second phase.

Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for these new metro corridors are actively underway and are expected to be completed within the next three months. The decision to revamp the route map came after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy mandated the abandonment of routes deemed impractical for the majority of the population.

Among the dropped routes is the Raidurg to Shamshabad Airport line, a 31-km stretch with an estimated cost of Rs 6,250 crore, for which the foundation stone was laid last year.

The revised routes aim to enhance airport connectivity in response to escalating traffic congestion and anticipated future demands for public transportation. The proposed routes will strategically connect the airport from various corners of the city, ensuring widespread access to metro rail services for Hyderabad’s commuters.

The primary objective of this redesigned metro rail connectivity is to provide cost-effective public transportation to a larger segment of the population. The previous metro rail network proposed by the former government was deemed financially burdensome and would serve a smaller demographic.

Presently, the Hyderabad Metro Rail operates on a 69 km stretch across three corridors. In the second phase, the network between Secunderabad JBS to MGBS will extend up to Chandrayangutta Cross Road. Additionally, four new corridors are slated for construction under the second phase expansion:

  1. Corridor 2: Extension from MGBS Metro Station to Falaknuma and from Falaknuma to Chandrayangutta Cross Road.
  2. Corridor 4: Extension from Nagole Metro Station to LB Nagar Metro Station, connecting Chandrayangutta Cross Road, Mailardevpally, P7 Road to Shamshabad Airport.
  3. Corridor 5: Stretching from Rayadurg Metro Station to Biodiversity Junction, Nanakramguda Junction, Wipro Junction, and American Consulate (Financial District).
  4. Corridor 6: 14-km route from Miyapur Metro Station to Patancheru via BHEL.
  5. Corridor 7: Connection from LB Nagar Metro Station to Vanasthalipuram and Hayat Nagar.
